Great week for Mac users. First the free Mac OS X Mavericks, second, free upgrade if you have iLife and iWorks installed in you Mac. Rejoice? Not really... If you do not have fast broadband speed, upgrading may take days or weeks. Mavericks itself is 5gb. I'm using 5mbps fibre and it takes around 3 to 4 hours to download. Not forget the installation process, which will take another 1 hour.
Also, your iLIfe and iWorks will not upgrade together with Mavericks. You need to update it from the Mac App store. Again, for iWorks it is around 500 Mb a piece (Pages, Keynote and Numbers), and iLife (iPhoto, iMovie, Garage Band) may take 3-4Gb download in total. The installation is fast, but will take a while in launching the apps.
Total upgrading time? An average of 10 hours on my 2010 Macbook with 5mbps download speed.
The bright side? No hiccups! Transition is smooth as butter, and the new OS has improved my Macbook's overall performance.
Let me know what your thought is.
