FFVII is one of the most influential FF games that was brought to western gamers. It also marks the first time FF games featured 3D game play and CG cut scenes. The core element of JRPG was introduced and made popular to the west.

Due to its popularity, Squaresoft expanded the FFVII universe and created a few spin offs like Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core. It even features its own movie.
